Mission Description                      

Job Purpose:
To carry out both preventative and corrective maintenance on trucks and handling equipment for AGL Namibia and entities. Attend to breakdowns outside town when required. Guides apprentices (when assigned) on safe and correct work methods. Manufactures replacement parts/sections/components for repairs, and repairs & maintains equipment and structures by carrying out metal welding work inside or outside the workshop

Key Responsibilities
Welding, Fabrication & Equipment Maintenance
• Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on trucks, trailers, heavy equipment, and handling machinery.
• Manufacture, modify, repair, and install metal components, structures, and assemblies from drawings, specifications, or samples.
• Execute high-quality welding using MIG, TIG, SMAW (Stick), and other approved welding processes.
• Conduct plate preparation, cutting, gouging, grinding, fitting, welding, and finishing of components.
• Perform welding repairs on structural components to extend equipment life and ensure safe operation.
• Apply approved welding procedures and quality control standards to all repair and fabrication work.
• Carry out pre-heating, post-weld treatment, and weld inspections where required.
• Maintain accurate records of repairs, materials used, and labour hours in job cards and maintenance systems.
Breakdown & Field Maintenance
• Respond to equipment and vehicle breakdowns both on-site and at remote locations when required.
• Assess equipment conditions, identify defects, and safely execute repairs.
• Provide technical feedback and recommendations to supervisors regarding repair requirements and equipment condition.
• Participate in after-hours emergency maintenance and standby duties to minimise downtime.
Quality, Safety & Compliance
• Ensure all welding and fabrication activities comply with company, OEM, and statutory requirements.
• Perform equipment isolation and hot-work safety procedures before commencing work.
• Promote and maintain a strong safety culture through compliance with HSE policies and procedures.
• Maintain excellent housekeeping standards in workshop and field environments.
• Identify and report hazards, incidents, and unsafe conditions.
Team Support & General Duties
• Assist in the training and mentoring of apprentices and assistants.
• Support lifting and rigging activities within authorised limits.
• Ensure proper care and storage of tools, welding equipment, and consumables.
• Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing quality, efficiency, and equipment reliability.

 

Profile

Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
• Grade 12
• National Trade Certificate (N3) in Welding, Fabrication, or a related trade.
• Valid Code B/BE Driver's Licence.
• Valid Certificate of Conduct.
Experience
• Minimum 6 years post-trade experience in welding, fabrication, and maintenance within a heavy industrial, engineering, transport, mining, or port environment.
• Proven experience in welding and fabrication workshops working with structural steel and heavy equipment.
• Extensive experience welding stainless steel (including SAF2205 and/or 316 grades) and mild steel.
• Proven competence in MIG, TIG, GTAW, and SMAW welding processes, including previous welding qualifications or coding up to 6G standard.
• Experience in gouging, plate preparation, structural repairs, and precision fabrication.
• Experience working on trucks, trailers, cranes, forklifts, reach stackers, or other heavy mobile equipment will be advantageous.
• Experience welding aluminium and cast iron will be considered an added advantage.
