Mission Description
White Horse Carriers is seeking a skilled Senior Boilermaker to join our team at our Brentwood, Johannesburg workshop for the support of our Zambia-based Zalawi Haulage cross-border truck and trailer fleet. The successful candidate will be responsible for fabricating, repairing, and maintaining structural components of our large fleet of trucks and trailers, ensuring durability and safety while leading assistant boilermakers and adhering to high-quality standards in line with workshop SOPs.
1) Key Responsibilities
a. Fabricate, assemble, and repair metal structures and components for Zalawi trucks and trailers, including chassis, body panels, and load-bearing frameworks.
b. Perform welding, cutting, and shaping of metal parts using tools such as MIG, TIG, and arc welders, plasma cutters, and oxy-acetylene torches.
c. Conduct inspections and maintenance of structural components to identify wear, corrosion, or damage and ensure compliance with safety standards.
d. Assign tasks to assistant boilermakers, provide clear instructions, and ensure their work is completed to the correct standard and in accordance with workshop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
e. Ensure all fabrication, welding, and repair work meets safety, industry, and workshop SOP standards, maintaining a high-quality standard across all tasks.
f. Document all work performed, including materials used and service records, for accurate fleet maintenance tracking.
g. Collaborate with workshop team members to prioritize tasks, mentor junior boilermakers, and maintain efficient workflow.
h. Stay updated on the latest fabrication techniques, welding technologies, and industry standards to enhance service quality.
2) Reporting and Procedures
a. Ensure jobcard processes are followed
b. Ensure stores/parts handling procedures are followed for the drawing/returning of parts, consumables, lubricants, etc and accountability is maintained according to procedure
c. Liaise closely with and report to the Deputy Technical Manager on all issues of which he should be aware

3) QHSE
a. Ensure workspaces are maintained to the expected safety standard for cleanliness, ventilation, lighting, overhead hazards, electrical safety, solvent use, etc
b. Monitor quality of work and ensure work is done to the standards expected, including areas such as the fault-finding process and testing prior to release
c. Ensure parts and components used in all workshop jobs are correct for application and of the quality standard expected
d. Ensure tools and machines are used and maintained in a safe manner and according to best practice/workshop procedures (right tool for the job)
4) Qualifications and Skills
a. Extensive experience as a boilermaker, preferably with heavy-duty trucks and trailers or similar heavy equipment.
b. Relevant trade certification or diploma in boilermaking, welding, or metal fabrication.
c. Strong knowledge of welding techniques (MIG, TIG, arc), metal fabrication, and structural repair processes.
d. Proficiency with fabrication tools and equipment, including welders, plasma cutters, and measuring instruments.
e. Competence in reading and interpreting technical drawings, blueprints, and specifications.
f. Strong leadership skills to assign tasks and ensure assistant boilermakers meet high-quality standards.
g. Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
h. Physical ability to handle heavy materials and work in a workshop environment.
i. Valid driver's license (Code 14 preferred but not mandatory).
j. Strong communication, leadership, and teamwork skills.
5) Working Conditions
a. Full-time position based in Brentwood, Johannesburg
b. Work primarily in the workshop, with occasional on-road assistance for related repairs and breakdowns
c. May require overtime or weekend work to meet fleet operational demands
d. Adherence to workshop safety protocols and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
