Mission Description
White Horse Carriers is seeking a dedicated Assistant Tyre Technician to join our team at our Brentwood, Johannesburg workshop. The successful candidate will support the Senior Tyre Technician in diagnosing tyre issues, conducting inspections, and performing maintenance and repair tasks for our large fleet of trucks and trailers, ensuring safety and efficiency while adhering to workshop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) under supervision.
1) Key Responsibilities
a. Assist in diagnosing tyre issues, such as wear patterns, punctures, sidewall damage, and pressure irregularities, using diagnostic tools under the guidance of the Senior Tyre Technician.
b. Support tyre inspections to assess condition, tread depth, and suitability for specific trucking applications, following senior technician instructions.
c. Perform tyre maintenance tasks, including mounting, balancing, rotations, repairs, and replacements, as directed, to optimize performance and extend tyre lifespan.
d. Assist in ensuring appropriate tyre usage for varying load, road, and weather conditions in the fleet.
e. Follow instructions from the Senior Tyre Technician to complete tasks accurately and in accordance with workshop SOPs.
f. Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring tyre tools and equipment are properly stored and maintained.
g. Document tyre inspections, maintenance, and repairs, including usage records, as instructed, to support accurate fleet maintenance tracking.
h. Collaborate with workshop team members to maintain an efficient workflow and learn from senior technicians.
i. Stay open to learning new techniques and technologies related to tyre maintenance and usage applications.

2) Reporting and Procedures
a. Ensure jobcard processes are followed
b. Ensure stores/parts handling procedures are followed for the drawing/returning of parts, consumables, lubricants, etc and accountability is maintained according to procedure
c. Liaise closely with and report to the Senior Tyre Technician on all issues of which he should be aware
3) QHSE
a. Ensure workspaces are maintained to the expected safety standard for cleanliness, ventilation, lighting, overhead hazards, electrical safety, solvent use, etc
b. Monitor quality of work and ensure work is done to the standards expected, including areas such as the fault-finding process and testing prior to release
c. Ensure parts and components used in all workshop jobs are correct for application and of the quality standard expected
d. Ensure tools and machines are used and maintained in a safe manner and according to best practice/workshop procedures (right tool for the job)
4) Qualifications and Skills
a. Basic experience or training as a tyre technician, preferably with heavy-duty vehicles (entry-level or apprentice experience acceptable).
b. Matric certificate (Grade 10 or higher) or equivalent; relevant technical training (e.g., tyre maintenance or automotive service courses) is a plus.
c. Basic knowledge of tyre diagnostics, maintenance, and usage applications for heavy-duty vehicles.
d. Familiarity with tyre-related tools and equipment, such as balancing machines, pressure gauges, and repair kits, with willingness to develop proficiency under supervision.
e. Ability to follow technical instructions and interpret tyre specifications with guidance.
f. Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and eagerness to learn.
g. Physical ability to handle heavy tyres and work in a workshop environment.
h. Valid driver's license (Code 14 preferred but not mandatory).
5) Working Conditions
a. Full-time position based in Brentwood, Johannesburg
b. Work primarily in the workshop, with occasional on-road assistance for tyre-related issues
c. May require overtime or weekend work to meet fleet operational demands
d. Adherence to workshop safety protocols and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
