Mission Description                      

White Horse Carriers is seeking a skilled Assistant Diesel Mechanic to join our team at our Brentwood, Johannesburg workshop for the support of our Zambia-based Zalawi Haulage cross-border truck and trailer fleet. The successful candidate will support the Senior Diesel Mechanic in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining our large fleet of trucks and trailers, ensuring operational efficiency and safety while adhering to workshop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) under supervision.

 

Profile

1) Key Responsibilities
a. Assist in diagnosing mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and air system issues in Zalawi trucks and trailers using diagnostic tools under the guidance of the Senior Diesel Mechanic.
b. Support repairs on engines, transmissions, brakes, steering systems, air systems, and electrical systems, following instructions to ensure proper functionality.
c. Perform routine maintenance tasks, such as oil changes, filter replacements, and tyre inspections, as directed, to prevent breakdowns and extend vehicle lifespan.
d. Help inspect and maintain trailer systems, including suspension, coupling mechanisms, and load-bearing components.
e. Follow instructions from the Senior Diesel Mechanic to complete tasks accurately and in accordance with workshop SOPs.
f. Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring tools and equipment are properly stored and maintained.
g. Document work performed, including parts used and service records, as instructed, to support accurate fleet maintenance tracking.
h. Collaborate with workshop team members to maintain an efficient workflow and learn from senior technicians.
i. Stay open to learning new techniques and technologies related to diesel engine systems and repairs.

3) Reporting and Procedures
a. Ensure jobcard processes are followed
b. Ensure stores/parts handling procedures are followed for the drawing/returning of parts, consumables, lubricants, etc and accountability is maintained according to procedure
c. Liaise closely with and report to the Senior Mechanic or Deputy Technical Manager on all issues of which they should be aware

4) QHSE
a. Ensure workspaces are maintained to the expected safety standard for cleanliness, ventilation, lighting, overhead hazards, electrical safety, solvent use, etc
b. Monitor quality of work and ensure work is done to the standards expected, including areas such as the fault-finding process and testing prior to release
c. Ensure parts and components used in all workshop jobs are correct for application and of the quality standard expected
d. Ensure tools and machines are used and maintained in a safe manner and according to best practice/workshop procedures (right tool for the job)

5) Qualifications and Skills
a. Basic experience or training as a diesel mechanic, preferably with heavy-duty vehicles (entry-level or apprentice experience acceptable).
b. Matric certificate (Grade 10 or higher) or equivalent; relevant technical training (e.g., N1-N3 in automotive or diesel mechanics) is a plus.
c. Basic knowledge of diesel engine systems, hydraulics, air systems, and electrical systems.
d. Familiarity with diagnostic tools and repair equipment, with willingness to develop proficiency under supervision.
e. Ability to follow technical instructions, read basic manuals, and interpret schematics with guidance.
f. Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and eagerness to learn.
