Mission Description
Job Purpose
The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for supporting the availability, safety, and reliability of AGL Namibia's truck fleet. The role focuses on preventative maintenance support, basic diagnostics and troubleshooting, minor repairs, breakdown assistance, basic tyre checks, inspections, and contributing to the development and implementation of maintenance SOPs and vehicle checklists, ensuring minimal downtime and compliance with safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
Fleet Maintenance Support
• Assist with the planning and tracking of the fleet maintenance schedule.
• Conduct routine inspections and basic preventative maintenance on trucks and trailers.
• Perform minor mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic repairs within scope.
• Prepare vehicles for scheduled services and roadworthiness inspections.
Diagnostics & Troubleshooting
• Assist with basic diagnostic testing and fault-finding on vehicle systems (engine, braking, electrical, and drivetrain).
• Use diagnostic tools and manufacturer guidelines to identify and troubleshoot mechanical or electronic faults.
• Provide technical input to external workshops and OEM dealers during advanced diagnostics and repairs.
• Escalate complex faults appropriately while supporting resolution and vehicle recovery.
SOPs & Vehicle Checklists
• Assist in developing, updating, and implementing maintenance-related SOPs.
• Create, review, and ensure completion of vehicle inspection and pre-/post-trip checklists.
• Verify that checklists are accurately completed, signed off, and filed.
• Identify trends from checklist data and recommend improvements.
Tyre Management
• Conduct basic tyre inspections (pressure, visible damage, tread condition).
• Carry out wheel changes and pressure adjustments where required.
• Report abnormal tyre wear or defects for escalation.
Breakdown & Operational Support
• Provide first-line breakdown support and on-site or roadside troubleshooting.
• Coordinate with external workshops, dealers, roadside assistance, and tyre vendors for major repairs.
• Support vehicle recovery and safe return to service.
Compliance, Safety & Quality
• Ensure all work complies with safety standards, legal requirements, and company policies.
• Ensure diagnostics, SOPs, and vehicle checklists support safe and compliant operations.
• Maintain a clean and safe workshop or work environment.
Reporting & Administration
• Complete maintenance, diagnostic, and inspection records accurately and timeously.
• Provide feedback on recurring faults, diagnostic findings, and maintenance risks.
• Support fleet performance reporting through maintenance and breakdown data.
Profile
Minimum Requirements
• Qualified Diesel Mechanic with Red Seal certification.
• Minimum 3–5 years' experience on heavy commercial vehicles.
• Practical experience with basic diagnostic tools and troubleshooting.
• Valid driver's licence (Code C / CE preferred).
• Ability to work and operate independently
• Experience with SCANIA & SHACMAN Trucks an added advantage.
