Position Overview
The General Manager of the Multi-Purpose Terminal is responsible for overseeing the operations, management, and strategic planning of the terminal. This role requires a dynamic leader with extensive experience in logistics, supply chain management, and terminal operations to ensure the efficient handling of container and breakbulk cargo, and maintain high standards of safety and productivity.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Management
• Oversee daily operations of the terminal, ensuring smooth and efficient handling of cargo.
• Implement best practices and streamline processes to optimize terminal productivity and reduce turnaround times.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant local and international regulations, including customs and safety standards.
• Coordinate with shipping lines, trucking companies, and other stakeholders to manage cargo flow and resolve operational issues.
• Monitor and manage terminal equipment, including cranes, forklifts, and other machinery, to ensure proper maintenance and functionality.
Strategic Planning and Development
• Develop and execute long-term strategic plans to enhance terminal capacity, efficiency, and competitiveness.
• Identify and implement new technologies and innovations to improve operational performance.
• Analyze market trends and customer needs to develop new business opportunities and expand terminal services.
• Work closely with government agencies and industry associations to advocate for policies that support terminal growth and development.
Financial Management
• Prepare and manage the terminal's annual budget, ensuring financial targets are met or exceeded.
• Monitor financial performance, analyzing key metrics to identify areas for improvement and cost-saving opportunities.
• Negotiate contracts with suppliers, customers, and service providers to ensure favorable terms and conditions.
• Ensure accurate and timely billing and collections to maintain positive cash flow.
Team Leadership and Development
• Lead and inspire a diverse team of professionals, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
• Recruit, train, and develop staff to ensure a skilled and motivated workforce.
• Implement performance management systems to evaluate employee performance and provide constructive feedback.
• Promote a safe and healthy work environment, enforcing adherence to safety protocols and regulations.
Profile
• South African permanent residency required
• Bachelor's degree in logistics, supply chain management, business administration, or a related field. A master's degree is preferred.
• Minimum of 10 years of experience in terminal operations, logistics, or a related industry, with at least 5 years in a managerial role.
• Strong knowledge of terminal equipment, operations, and safety protocols.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Proven ability to develop and execute strategic plans.
• Strong financial acumen and experience managing budgets and financial performance.
• Ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, industry associations, and customers.
• Proficiency in using terminal operating systems and other relevant software.
