Mission Description                      

Job Purpose
Develop, facilitate, assess and continuously improve the competence of AGL drivers and, where required, subcontracted drivers to support safe, legal, reliable and quality-focused transport operations. Deliver theoretical, practical, yard-based and in-cab training and assessment in accordance with applicable South African road transport legislation, prevailing QCTO/TETA requirements and recognised occupational/unit-standard frameworks, AGL Transport Golden Rules, approved procedures, customer requirements and the AGL QHSE Management System. The role provides specialist driver training, coaching, assessment and competency assurance to support safe, compliant and efficient transport operations.

1. Driver Training and Development
• Plan and deliver induction, initial, refresher, remedial and periodic driver training using classroom, practical, yard-based and in-cab methods.
• Train drivers in professional and defensive driving, vehicle familiarisation, inspections, reversing/manoeuvring, coupling/uncoupling, safe parking and breakdown procedures.
• Deliver training on load securing, lashing/unlashing, cargo stability, loading/offloading safety, fatigue and journey management, rollover/collision prevention, hijacking prevention, emergency response, incident reporting and AGL Transport Golden Rules.
• Deliver or facilitate Dangerous Goods and customer/product-specific training within the trainer's approved competence and registration scope.
• Provide on-the-job coaching, toolbox talks and targeted awareness sessions for new, inexperienced or under-performing drivers.

2. Driver Competency Assessment
• Conduct initial, periodic, post-incident and remedial theoretical and practical competency assessments against applicable occupational/unit standards, AGL requirements and approved assessment criteria.
• Conduct in-cab/accompanied driving assessments and observations covering vehicle control, road behaviour, hazard perception, defensive driving, route discipline and safe operating practices.
• Assess competence for relevant vehicle categories and specialised activities within registered scope; record outcomes and recommend drivers as competent, requiring coaching/reassessment, or not yet competent.
• Reassess drivers following serious incidents, repeated unsafe behaviour, significant telematics events or identified competency gaps.
• Verify appropriate licence, PrDP, medical fitness and authorisation before practical or in-cab training/assessment and escalate identified gaps.

3. Route Risk and Specialised Transport
• Participate with QHSE and Transport Operations in route risk assessments, surveys and route familiarisation for new, changed, high-risk or customer-specific routes.
• Identify relevant road, traffic, security, environmental, weather, rest-stop, parking, loading/offloading, border and emergency-response hazards and translate approved controls into driver briefings and training.

 

Profile

RULES AND REGULATIONS
• Conduct training and assessment in accordance with AGL procedures, the QHSE Management System and applicable South African road transport, Dangerous Goods and occupational health and safety requirements.
• Maintain working knowledge of the National Road Traffic Act and applicable Road Traffic Regulations, prevailing QCTO/TETA requirements and relevant transport standards.
• Support compliance with RTMS, SQAS and applicable customer requirements relating to driver competence and road safety.
• Report hazards, unsafe driver behaviour, competency deficiencies, incidents and training-related non-compliance through
Minimum Education, Qualifications and Experience
• Matric / Grade 12 - required.
• Valid EC (Code 14) Driver's Licence and valid Professional Driving Permit (PrDP) appropriate to the transport activities performed - required.
• Minimum 5 years' practical professional heavy-vehicle driving experience, preferably including articulated/combination vehicles, long-distance transport and general freight.
• Demonstrable experience in driver training, coaching and practical competency assessment in a heavy-vehicle transport environment.
• Qualified Assessor in accordance with applicable QCTO/TETA or recognised occupational training requirements - required.
• Qualified Facilitator or equivalent recognised training
• Competent and, where applicable, registered/authorised to assess professional-driving standards relevant to AGL operations, including US 123253 (rigid heavy vehicle), US 123254 (vehicle combination), US 123259 (Convey Dangerous Goods by Road, where applicable), or prevailing replacement/equivalent occupational qualifications or unit standards.
• Recognised Dangerous Goods transport qualification/training where Dangerous Goods activities form part of the operational scope.
• Practical knowledge of the NRTA, Road Traffic Regulations, Dangerous Goods requirements and relevant professional road-transport standards.
• Demonstrated competence in defensive driving, vehicle inspections, coupling/uncoupling, load securing, fatigue management, rollover/collision prevention and emergency response.
• Experience in classroom, yard/practical and in-cab training/assessment; route risk/familiarisation experience advantageous.
• Ability to interpret incident and telematics trends, maintain accurate electronic records and travel to sites, customer locations and operational routes as required.
Key Competencies
• Strong heavy-vehicle driving, road-safety, hazard perception and route-risk knowledge.
• Effective facilitation, coaching and adult-learning skills with objective, consistent assessment judgement and high integrity.
• Good communication, observation, analytical, problem-solving, record-keeping and report-writing skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively with Transport Operations, QHSE and other relevant teams; practical, solutions-focused and committed to continuous improvement.
