Mission Description
Job Purpose
The overall purpose of the role is to provide strategic leadership and direction to the Johannesburg branch, ensuring the achievement of operational, commercial and financial objectives. The General Manager is accountable for business growth, customer satisfaction, profitability, operational excellence, people development, risk management and compliance while fostering a high-performance culture aligned with AGL South Africa's strategic objectives.
Leadership and Management
• Provide strategic leadership and direction to all JHB business units.
• Develop and execute business strategies aligned to AGL South Africa's objectives.
• Lead, motivate and develop management teams to ensure operational excellence and succession planning.
• Establish and monitor branch KPIs and performance objectives.
• Drive organisational change and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, innovation and customer focus.
• Identify organisational development requirements and ensure appropriate talent development interventions are implemented.
Operations
• Provide leadership and oversight of all operational functions within the JHB branch.
• Review and optimise organisational structures, workflows and processes to enhance efficiency and productivity.
• Ensure operational activities are executed safely, efficiently and in compliance with company standards and legislative requirements.
• Drive operational excellence initiatives to improve service delivery, customer satisfaction and profitability.
• Proactively engage with internal and external stakeholders to ensure operational effectiveness and business continuity.
• Monitor operational performance and implement corrective actions where necessary.
• Ensure systems and digital tools are optimised and fully utilised to support business objectives.
Commercial and Financial
• Develop and implement strategies to grow revenue and market share within the region.
• Build, maintain and strengthen strategic relationships with customers, suppliers and key stakeholders.
• Support commercial teams in identifying and securing new business opportunities.
• Ensure customer retention through exceptional service delivery and proactive engagement.
• Accountable for achievement of branch revenue, gross profit and EBITDA targets.
• Ensure effective budgeting, forecasting and financial management of the branch.
• Analyse financial performance and implement corrective measures where required.
• Manage costs, risks and resources to maximise profitability and sustainability.
• Ensure accurate and timeous submission of management reports, forecasts and budgets.
• Monitor contract performance and identify opportunities for business growth and improvement.
Profile
Risk, Compliance and Governance
• Ensure compliance with all applicable legislation, company policies, procedures and governance requirements.
• Promote adherence to Quality, Health, Safety, Security and Environmental (QHSE) standards.
• Identify, assess and mitigate operational, commercial and financial risks.
• Ensure effective internal controls and compliance monitoring processes are maintained.
• Support internal and external audits and implement corrective actions where required.
Other Responsibilities
• Maintain and promote the AGL South Africa culture, values and ethical standards.
• Ensure appropriate employee discipline and performance management processes are implemented.
• Effectively resolve customer, employee and stakeholder concerns or conflicts.
• Represent AGL professionally within industry forums, customer engagements and business networks.
• Perform any other reasonable duties as required by the COO, Managing Director or designated executive.
Education:
• Bachelor's Degree in Business Management, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Commerce or related field.
• Postgraduate qualification (MBA or equivalent) advantageous.
Experience:
• Minimum 10-15 years' experience in logistics, freight forwarding, supply chain or related industries.
• Minimum 5 years' experience in a senior management or executive leadership role.
• Proven track record in business development, operational management and financial accountability.
